Trade Secrets: Artist Residencies with Spark Box Studio
Are you an artist who has been wanting to get away and create?
Do you love the idea of making work in a new environment and studio?
Do you love to connect with new people and share ideas and resources?
An artist residency might be a perfect experience for you! But maybe you don’t know about artist residencies or aren’t sure if they are the right fit for you.
In this workshop artist residency owners Chrissy Poitras and Kyle Topping speak about all topics related to artist residencies. With 10+ years of running their residency Spark Box Studio, which has hosted over 400 artists from all across the globe, these two have loads of helpful tips to share.
This workshop will be focused on addressing the most common questions artists have, such as:
- Where to find residency opportunities
- Understanding the application process
- Residency expectations
- Community engagement
- Best practices
Additionally, this workshop will act as an incubator for comprehensive solutions. While, a vital part of this workshop is Chrissy and Kyle’s commitment to sharing their personal story and lessons they’ve learned through running Spark Box Studio, they also want to hear from you! Perhaps you have had a residency experience and would like to share the knowledge you have. Perhaps their are questions you want answered and haven’t found yet. This open dialogue, moderated by Chrissy and Kyle, will generate a wealth of information, related to the exact questions the you are seeking answers for.

About Chrissy & Kyle:
Since 2009, Chrissy Poitras and Kyle Topping have been hosting a vibrant community artist residency and printmaking studio in their rural Ontario farmhouse. Spark Box Studio has welcomed over 400 visiting artists from around the world who have come to find time and space away from their routines to focus on a variety of arts ranging from painting and poetry, to music and film.
Above all else, they view Spark Box as a resource by artists for artists. It's a place to create, research and grow. A place to learn, develop and explore. However artists, community members and visitors engage with them, the goal is to provide artists with the tools and connections to successfully share their vision with the world.
Both are graduates of the Queen’s University Bachelor of Fine Art Studio Program. Both are practicing artists working in painting and printmaking. Through their positions at Spark Box Studio, and as a former professor in the Art and Design Foundations Program at Loyalist College, Poitras and Topping have organized, developed and run courses on a variety of studio arts and arts management topics. They are highly involved in their artistic community and have built a career that is rooted in creation, community and public outreach.
